Sharing is caring!

This all natural essential oil salve is so versatile. I have used it with excellent results for all kinds of skin issues from eczema to acne, baby diaper rash to dry skin. My family’s skin has been extra dry this winter so I whipped up a double batch this week to have on hand. It is easy to make. . . just melt and pour! This salve is free of toxins, dyes, perfumes or preservatives. It has a luxurious silky feel and smells amazing.

Every winter my family struggles with dry skin. . . Itchy, dry elbows, scaly patches on arms and legs . . . it’s a real problem. This salve is our go-to for calming down all kinds of skin issues.

I recently used this salve on my baby’s newborn acne/eczema and cradle cap. It worked wonders and was the ONLY thing that seemed to help. I swear by it and am making it regularly for friend baby who has diaper rash.

You don’t need to slather it thick. . . a thin layer is all you need.

While it may seem strange to put oil on your face, our face actually responds to the LACK of oils or moisture by OVER-producing oil and sebum. This causes clogging of pores and may result in acne.

When we give our skin nourishing oils, the over-production of pore-clogging gunk stops. Skin is healthier, smoother with less blemishes. It really works!

Essential Oil Salve and it’s many uses:

  • Eczema
  • Dry, chapped skin and lips
  • Sun-damage and age spots
  • Acne
  • Baby diaper rash
  • Cradle cap
  • newborn acne and eczema
  • Superficial scrapes or burns

CAUTION: do not use on open cuts or sores. If you have a spot that is not healing, you should see your doctor. While essential oils are mild, consider trying a TEST SPOT on a small patch of skin before you rub all over yourself!

Essential Oil Salve – All Natural Ingredients:

Coconut oil is full of beneficial fatty acids that not only have antibiotic, and antifungal but antiviral properties as well. Antioxidants can prevent premature aging. I use this salve on my face every night!

Beeswax provides a protectant layer and is also a humectant, which means it attracts moisture and seals it into the skin. Unlike petroleum (a non-renewable oil by-product) . . beeswax allows the skin to breathe.

Olive oil acts as an emollient or has the property of a natural moisturizer. It contains antioxidants and vitamins like A and E. The anti-inflammatory property of olive oil helps stimulate and repair skin cells revealing, healthier, smoother, firmer skin!

NOTE ON ALLERGIES: If you are allergic to any component of this ointment I would advise against using it. If you are allergic to bees (aka bee venom) it is unlikely that you are also allergic to beeswax or honey. However it is advisable that you check with your doctor first and always use a small amount and check for adverse reaction.

Benefits of Essential Oils:

Essential oils (EOs) are the essence of plants. Inside roots, seeds, flowers or bark there can be amazing natural healing compounds. These compounds are highly concentrated and powerful at just small amounts.

Essential oils can be used on the skin, diffused into the air or even taken internally to reap the benefits. Good quality EOs are a healthy, healing alternative to synthetic chemicals that can negatively effect our skin and the way we feel.

No matter where you choose to source or EOs make sure they are HIGH QUALITY and PURE. You can get all kinds of oils from grocery stores, pharmacies or even amazon but if their quality and purity cannot be guaranteed I would not recommend them.

I personally prefer and highly recommend both doTerra or Young Living essential oils. I own a collection of both brands and their purity standards and harvest practices can’t be beat.

Essential Oils in this All-Natural Salve recipe:

Lemon Essential Oil has antiseptic properties and is helpful to reduce inflammation. It also has a energizing scent. It is a natural analgesic which means it can help rashy, irritated skin FEEL better.

Lavender helps disinfect the skin but also enhances blood circulation and promotes healing. It has antifungal and won’t clog pores.

Tea tree is not only a powerful disinfectant but also has strong anti-fungal properties. It is great for acne too.

How to make Essential Oil Salve it:

Wash your container with hot water and soap and dry thoroughly. Always use glass or metal containers when storing essential oil based products.

Plastic containers can become broken down by essential oils. To keep your product fresh, airtight glass is preferred.

Because I always have them on hand in lots of different sizes, I like mason jars for EO recipes.

Using a cheese grater, grate your beeswax. Alternatively, you can purchase beeswax pellets to make this part easier.

Measure and pour 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup coconut oil, 1/4 cup beeswax shreds/beads in glass or metal bowl or double boiler.

If you don’t have a double boiler use a heat safe bowl and pot that is small enough for the bowl to sit on top of.

Place bowl of ingredients over a pan of gently boiling water.

Stir with wooden spoon until completely melted.

Remove from heat, allow to cool slightly and add 20-30 drops of preferred essential oils.

I let mine cool in the refrigerator until the consistency of pudding before a put in the jar. You could pour directly into jars and pop them into the refrigerator to set if you like!

Essential Oil Salve| Storage Considerations:

This salve is quite soft and silky. It will melt back to a liquid pretty easily in a hot room or if you leave it in a hot car.

Use a good, tight sealing lid and if it melts you can always store in refrigerator.

I have no problem keeping this at room temperature in my home.

Variations:

When photographing this recipe for you, I did add 1/8 C. of RAW honey. Raw honey has amazing properties for the skin.

It helps balance bacteria and speeds up cell’s healing process. This is great for eczema and breakouts.

The unpasteurized nature of honey speeds healing and reduces inflammation.

If you have access to Manuka Honey, that is even more beneficial. Manuka honey is produced from the flower of the Manuka tree of New Zealand. It has been known to have antioxidant and anticancer properties. The downside is it is quite expensive. Isn’t it amazing what one little animal can produce. . . WITH THEIR SPIT?!

Checkout this article for more info about antibacterial properties of honey.

When adding the honey, it does make the texture of the salve SLIGHTLY sticky so use where that wouldn’t matter as much.

Add 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil. Vitamin E helps reduce inflammation and is great for scars.

Replace half of the coconut oil with Shea Butter for a firmer more nourishing lotion or lip balm. Shea butter is moisturizing and has concentrated vitamins and fatty acids.

Use caution with HOT and WARM oils

Oils like cinnamon, clove, oregano and thyme are considered HOT oils and therefore could cause sensitivity. Use less of them and be cautious. Do not put near eyes or mucus membranes. Use extreme caution in pregnancy and with children or babies.

Peppermint, deep blue, lemongrass, spearmint, black pepper, wintergreen are considered warm oils. Warm oils can still cause problems if not diluted properly so while I encourage you to experiment, BE CAREFUL.
