Practical birthday gifts are just the best! This year my sister moved into a new home, had a new baby and still works FULL TIME. She would really like and certainly deserves a beautiful, welcoming and relaxing front porch. My mom and I decided to give her just that for her birthday – a Modern Farmhouse Front Porch Makeover!

5 Steps to your OWN Modern Farmhouse Front Porch Makeover

Step 1: Have a Plan

Choose a Design Style:

I start a design plan by determining the style I am going for then searching magazines, books and Pinterest to collect inspiration and ideas.

It is a great idea to create a Pinterest board and add collaborators if you are doing the project with someone else. Just spend a week or so collecting ideas.

My sister likes Modern Farmhouse so that is what I looked for!

Choose a Color Scheme:

I recommend picking 2 main colors that can be more neutral and an accent color that can be used sparingly for a POP of interest. . . also consider ONE pattern. If you plan too many different colors and patterns the design can look to “busy”. For our Modern Farmhouse Front porch we chose black, white with teal accents.

Once I have a plan, color scheme and inspiration photos, I use a program called Canva to create a design board. The FREE version of Canva will get you a long way but you can also choose a monthly plan for very reasonable prices.

Another great way to do this is to just print pictures, cut them out and make a poster board design plan.

Step 2: Collect Things (THRIFT what you can)

Designing and redecorating a space CAN get expensive. It is always a great idea to set a BUDGET and if you have time source items second hand and used.

Now, I’ll be honest, I’m not great at the budget part because I tend to get excited about design . . . but it is really important to have a set idea of what you can spend on ANY makeover.

Look for items in thrift stores, second hand stores, yard sales and online marketplaces. I really wanted to find second hand patio furniture but could not find any for a reasonable price.

I ended up getting this wicker patio chair set from Walmart. They are very sturdy but came in a TINY box, needing a fairly extensive assembly.

My mom found 2 wicker pieces, coffee table and black/white plaid table runner at a second hand store ON SALE! She spray painted the coffee table black and Viola!!

I was able to find a couple black vases and throw pillows for under $5 at the thrift store. You can always wash or spray paint items to give them new life in your own design!

Step 3: Clean Slate

You should ALWAYS, ALWAYS completely clean and remove everything from the space before you start your design. This helps you look at the space itself and decide how best to DEFINE areas.

Also, take advantage of the cleared space and DEEP CLEAN if you have time.

Ask yourself what do you NEED from the space?

Consider what you NEED in a space. How is the space supposed to function?

In our case they wanted a relaxed seating area, space for their kids to hang with them but also needed space to BBQ, prepare food, serve food and also dog food storage!!

You have to be practical – maybe a dog feeding area isn’t exactly beautiful but if you don’t plan in these functional areas the space will eventually morph into that anyway. It is best to just plan for it ahead of time.

We decided to designate this cute wicker storage piece for the dog food.

Step 4: Add furniture and larger Pieces

Once your space is cleared and cleaned you can begin adding your larger pieces to the defined areas.

We added chairs, tables and rugs and a kid’s pod swing seat to the “sitting area” . A plastic folding table for the BBQ and black wicker side table completed the cooking area. We tucked wicker dog food storage basket in a convenient location too.

These large items define the space. Do this first even though you may be tempted to jump to adding the beautiful accents.

Step 5: Accessorize with accents and details

BRING ON THE BEAUTY!! As always this is my FAVORITE part . . .

Remember your accent color? We chose teal because that is my sister’s favorite color. Vases, blankets, throw pillows,signs, dishes . . . these are all great ways to add a POP of color and interest.

You may also choose to add personalized touches. . . cute signs or pieces that are unique to the person. This is a really FUN part of Farmhouse design.

Looking back on our design, I meant to add a teal throw blanket and spray paint the black vase teal to really make her favorite color POP but EHHHH it’s ok. . .

I always, always add plants to ANY design – real or faux – we went faux to make it easy on this busy Momma. It’s up to you but plants and greens really make a space feel ALIVE!
