So What is a Small Potager Garden Anyway?
Potager pronounced, “poe-ta-zhay” is a French style of gardening that combines vegetables with herbs and flowers. It is both ornamental and productive. There is typically a focal point for the eye. Line, color, texture and rhythm brings it all together.
Now, DON’T let this “fancy” description intimidate you.
A potager is literally translated to “for the soup pot” and is a Kitchen Garden.
A Potager is meant for everyday use, for enjoying what’s in season and creating the menu from what is begging to be enjoyed.
It provides the home cook with lots of options and inspiration for gathering the makings of that day’s meals.
Within a Potager style garden you create something akin to moment: little places to escape, an oasis where you might feel momentarily transported and at peace. This doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be filled with what YOU think is beautiful and what inspires YOU to make yummy foods for your family and friends.
Gardening can be quite intimidating for many, I know but it doesn’t have to be. . . yes you can put in a huge space with lots of rows and many plants to tend to. Not to mention weeds to pluck.
BUT you can also start SMALL and put in a little garden that serves the everyday culinary needs of your family. . . even if it is just to scratch the itch and get the ball rolling .
Starting with just a small space allows you to learn what your family likes to eat, experiment with plant varieties that grow well in your area WITHOUT catastrophic result if a whole crop is an utter disaster.
OKAY so you learned what doesn’t work – now move on.
Gather, cook, eat what you can and try another variety or a different plant all together.
Potager to Market Garden?
When you feel confident you can move on to a larger garden. Maybe you envision a more traditional “Market Style Garden” designed for production and less for beauty – one that you can harvest large amounts from.
Trust me a Small Potager style garden will make you FALL IN LOVE with gardening. You will succumb to the whimsy and beauty as you learn to grow your own food.
Bay taking baby steps you can learn to preserve, can, store and take charge of your own Food Security.
For right now, focus on TODAY – don’t let a garden intimidate you. I encourage you to jump in – start a Potager, keep it small. Plant flowers you love and veggies you’d like to try.
Have FUN with the process, celebrate the successes AND the failures. Because you are learning and above all enjoy the BEAUTY
and deliciousness along the way.
Why start with a Small Potager Garden?
Well my friend, I am so glad you asked. A Potager serves two purposes; Beauty & Practicality. Within those two seemingly innocent purposes lies nourishment for body and the soul.
BEAUTY : a literal FEAST for the senses!
Nasturtiums, marigolds, climbing sweet peas. All those beautiful blooms that keep good bugs happy in the garden and pests at bay. They add magnificent color and immense beauty.
Think cascading trellises of green bean vine, cucumber, squash or melon. Soft, abundant tomatoes and blankets of colorful lettuces.
PRACTICALITY – A FEAST for the body!
Remember a potager literally contains everything “for the soup pot”.
Salads for days! All the greens spinach, chard, romaine, basil, parsley, sweet pea ready for the picking to create a crisp, fresh, nutrient dense salad.
Frilly green carrot tops, tall regal broccoli and creamy white cauliflower ready for roasting and stewing.
